19 Feb Local attraction rehomes Tropical Wings meerkats and tortoises
When an Essex zoo announced it would close for good in December 2017, finding new homes for the animals became a priority for its owners.
Although most were safely relocated to other zoos and wildlife parks, the owners had to temporarily postpone their retirement, so that they could look after a family of meerkats and three unusual tortoises.
The twenty Slender-Tailed meerkats and three Giant African Spurred tortoises were fostered by the couple, prior to them moving to their new home at the brand new WILD attraction at Sea-Life Adventure in Southend-on-Sea, which is opening soon.
“We’re delighted that our much-loved meerkats and tortoises from Tropical Wings have gone to a wonderful new home. We know the team at Sea-Life Adventure will really look after and cherish them as much as we have. It was sad to see them finally go but it is lovely that they are staying in Essex. I’m sure many of our regular visitors will want to see them at WILD, as will we, so it’s great that they will still be nearby,” says Rona.
Building work is now underway on the site of the former crazy golf course – next to the popular visitor attraction on the town’s Eastern Esplanade – and will be completed in the next few weeks.
