08 Nov The Future Isn’t Priti: Priti Patel could lose cabinet role over Israel meetings
by Matthew Martino
The future isn’t looking pretty for International Development Secretary Priti Patel as further information about her Israel meetings continues to unfold.
Prime Minister Theresa May is now under increasing pressure to remove Priti Patel from her cabinet after she apologised for 12 undisclosed meetings held during a “family holiday”. Labour’s shadow Cabinet Office minister Jon Trickett called it “a clear breach of the ministerial code”.
Whilst one of the meetings held by the Witham MP was with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she has now admitted to two further meetings.
It is understood that Ms Patel did not follow procedure and report these meetings to the Foreign Office or Government.
BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg suggested that “Ms Patel’s departure may be rather imminent” adding “nothing confirmed yet” in a tweet.
When Ms Patel returned from her trip she commissioned Department for International Development (DfID) work on disability, humanitarian and development partnerships between Israel and the UK.
