EDWINA Currie has become the latest Tory to hit out at Matt Hancock over his decision to star in I’m A Celeb.
In a no-holds barred blast the former Tory MP – who starred in series 14 of the ITV show – told GB News: “Well, most of the people who are going to the jungle, and it’s true this year, are going for two reasons. Reason number one is they think in some way it’s going to enhance their reputation or their career, and reason number two is they’re getting paid a humongous amount of money.
“And that’s certainly true for everybody that’s in the jungle this year. So those who are reacting with horror to Matt Hancock are being a little hypocritical about their reasons for being in the jungle.
“However I don’t think he should be there. I think he’s already got an important job. If he wants to raise issues about dyslexia, he can do it on the back benches in the House of Commons.
“He’s an incredibly naive, immature guy, he hasn’t figured out that people are genuinely annoyed and apologising for resigning doesn’t actually resolve that.”
Ms Currie, speaking during an interview with Andrew Pierce, added: “If he wants to show what a nice guy he is, well you have plenty of opportunities in Britain – he does not have to go 10,000 miles around the world to do that.
Asked who she thought would win, she told GB News: “Well, it won’t be Matt Hancock, apart from anything else. In order to win you need the support of the public and I’m pretty sure partly because he’s there, partly because he broke the lockdown rules and people still feel very, very sore about that
“Personally, I think I’d like somebody like Mike Tindall to do it, because he’s such a good guy. He’s an absolutely all around lovable, good guy.
“Boy George? No, he’s a bit of a pompous – I think there’s a short three letter word for him, isn’t
there?”
Ms Currie added: “We killed 20,000 people who were discharged from hospital, put them into care homes and Covid just spread like wildfire through an extremely vulnerable population. That was avoidable, it was unforgivable, in my view…
“What Matt Hancock has taken into the jungle, and he’s not the only one that’s there this year, is a massive ego. He’s somebody who as a teenager was very clever, he ended up with a first at Oxford. Somebody should have said to him, ‘Matt, you’re very bright but you don’t know everything’.
“Somewhere along the line other people’s opinions do matter. They do count your behaviour, on several levels [it] has been reprehensible and you can’t simply wipe that slate clean.”
Speaking about her own experiences there she said: “I had a good time. I enjoyed myself. I wasn’t trying to do anything more than have a bit of fun, and met a lot of good people. I enjoyed myself, some of the games that they’re playing already, like the mole game, are exactly the same as I got involved in with Jake Quickenden in 2014.
“It’s great fun deceiving all your campmates and telling lies to them, and then their faces when they discover they’ve been had. That’s fun.”
