16 May Complete Commedia bring summer madness to Horndon Feast and Fayre
Thurrock’s own professional theatre troupe, The Complete Commedia Company is embarking on an ambitious project to bring a new festival of theatre to the borough. Following the success of the Company’s Schoolyard Scenarios and A Christmas Carol in 2021, it brings an original piece of theatre to Horndon on the Hill for the annual Feast and Fayre in June.
On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June, the Complete Commedia Company present their very first Commedia dell’Arte street festival in conjunction with the Horndon Feast and Fayre. Join them and students from two local schools: Woodlands School and Grays Convent High School, for two days of riotous fun as 16th century Italian comedy is brought live to the streets of Horndon on the Hill. The festival showcases the work of students at both schools who have worked with the Complete Commedia Company to learn the art of Commedia dell’Arte. It will also premier the company’s brand new show made especially to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
On Saturday 25 June, students from Woodlands School in key stages 3 and 4 perform their own original pieces of Commedia dell’Arte. Sunday 26 June sees Grays Convent High School key stage 3 students present their Commedia work. Performances begin at 12:30pm and run until 3.30pm on both days. All performances are completely free and will take place in the car park of the Horndon on the Hill Village Hall.
The Complete Commedia Company present the premier of their hilarious and playful new show ‘A Midsummer Night’s Jubilee’ on Saturday 25 June at 7pm. The performance is an irreverent take on Shakespeare’s much loved comedy romance. This performance is also free, but booking is essential through the Complete Commedia website: www.thecompletecommediacompany.co.uk
This project has been made possible through the Jubilee Let’s Create Fund and the Royal Opera House Bridge Trailblazer scheme.
Artistic Director and co-founder, Bernadette Wakeling said ‘We cannot wait to bring Commedia to Horndon’s annual street festival. The two seem perfect partners. Working with young people in schools is always a delight as they are so open to the slapstick comedy, energy and masks that are the essentials of Commedia. Audiences are in for a treat, and we so look forward to performing for them.’
The Complete Commedia Company has 20 years’ experience in the classical Italian artform. To find out more about the company, please go to www.thecompletecommediacompany.co.uk.
