13 Nov Basildon Council helps local litter pickers plant trees for community
A group of litter pickers known as the Wickford Wombles have planted eight trees along Radwinter Avenue.
The group were assisted by Basildon Council’s Arboricultural and Grounds Maintenance Officer, Paul Smith, who provided stakes, tree ties and helped plant the ornamental pear, purple birch, snow goose flowering cherry and mountain ash trees.
Kim Oakes, from the Wickford Wombles, said: “We raised the money by holding a vintage tea party, table top sales and from donations. We think it’s important to plant trees for variety, the environment and local wildlife.”
Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison said: “”The Wombles do such a fantastic job helping to keep Wickford clean and tidy, now they’ve taken it a step further by raising the funds to buy trees which will further improve the area, and the council is pleased to be able to help, and will do the same across the borough”
