16 Nov Awards celebrate local sporting heroes
Individuals, clubs and teams who make an invaluable contribution to physical activity in the borough were recognised at the Active Basildon Sports Awards 2018.
The awards celebrate talent, commitment and determination, with winners scooping trophies across nine categories. Highly commended nominees were also announced in six of the groups during a ceremony at Reids in Billericay last night (Thursday 15 November).
Basildon Athletics Club member Sam Bennett, who won gold in the 110m hurdles at the European Athletics U18 Championships, was named Sports Personality of the Year. Racing driver Emily Linscott, who will next week make her international debut in a Formula 4 car at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia, was named Young Sports Personality of the Year.
Awards were handed out by Mayor of Basildon, Cllr David Dadds; Chief Executive of Basildon Council, Scott Logan; Basildon Council’s Leisure Development Manager, Grant Taylor; and Director of Active Essex, Jason Fergus.
Cllr Dadds said: “We have some incredibly talented sports people in the borough, and it’s important that we reward their success to inspire the next generation to achieve their full potential.
“All of the winners have demonstrated their extraordinary commitment to the local community, making an outstanding contribution either to or through sport. It was an honour to meet so many rising and accomplished sports people, as well as the unsung heroes who nurture talent or make physical activity accessible to everyone.”
