Stephen Metcalfe hands over constituency petition to Lloyds Bank at meeting in Parliament

12 Jul Stephen Metcalfe hands over constituency petition to Lloyds Bank at meeting in Parliament

Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, met with representatives of Lloyds Bank on 12 July, in Parliament, to hand over the constituency’s petition against the closure of Corringham’s last bank.

Stephen met with local campaigners on 30 June and received their petition against the closure of Corringham Town’s last bank branch. At the meeting, he also discussed local residents’ strong support for the maintenance of in-person banking services.

Following this, Stephen asked the Deputy Prime Minister, at Prime Minister’s Questions on 5 July, what more the Government could do to maintain in-person banking services and support our town centres.

Subsequently, Stephen organised a meeting with Lloyds Bank to hand over the petition, which took place today in Parliament. At the meeting, Lloyds Bank confirmed that the Corringham branch closure had been delayed until next year – acknowledging the problems caused by the closure of Corringham’s Post Office. They also agreed to formally respond to the petition. Whilst Stephen awaits a response, he will contact LINK to explore other banking options such as a Banking Hub.

Stephen Metcalfe said: “Over 1,675 people signed the petition against the closure of Corringham Town’s last bank branch – that’s enormous. I am glad that Lloyds Bank recognises the problems caused by the closure of Corringham’s Post Office and is pushing back the Corringham branch closure. I will continue to look for solutions.”
