£2million investment in psychiatric intensive care ward in Basildon

17 Mar £2million investment in psychiatric intensive care ward in Basildon

A psychiatric intensive care unit has received a £2million renovation to enhance safety and create a more therapeutic environment.

Hadleigh Unit, based at Basildon Mental Health Unit on the Basildon Hospital site, provides intensive care for people experiencing mental health crisis.

The 15 bedrooms have been refurbished, including new doors fitted with safety alarms and new furniture with safety features.

A new heating and ventilation system has been put in place and the flooring and lighting replaced.
The ward has been given a fresh coat of paint throughout, and new wall art installed.
The de-escalation and seclusion areas have been made bigger and refurbished to create a more therapeutic environment. These areas are where patients are taken, if needed, for their own and for other patients’ safety.
Tracy Abbott, Capital Projects Manager, said: “These improvements are part of our investment in enhancing safety and making our inpatient wards more therapeutic and comfortable for the people we care for.”
Our Capital Projects team worked closely with clinical staff and colleagues from the Estates and Facilities team over seven months to complete the work.

Patients were admitted to other wards within the Trust for care while the renovation took place.
