Basildon woman fined for flytipping at the back of her own home

11 Mar Basildon woman fined for flytipping at the back of her own home

A woman who pleaded guilty to dumping a sofa at the back of her own home has been fined.

Suzanne McDonnell, 32, of Aspen Court, Basildon, appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 7 March after being arrested for failing to attend a previous hearing on 4 March.

Miss McDonnell pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened on 10 September last year, under s33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and was fined £120, costs of £423 plus a £30 victim surcharge.

Councillor Kevin Blake, Chairman of Basildon Council’s Leisure, Culture and Environment Committee, said: “We are committed to ensuring those who fly-tip are held to account, which is why we expanded our Street Scene Enforcement and Education team by two officers to strengthen our ability to tackle incidents which blight communities.

“This case shows we will prosecute wherever possible when evidence exists. Everyone is responsible for ensuring all their waste is disposed of correctly and goes to a legal, licensed waste carrier. For the cost of just £10 for five items residents can arrange for a special collection from the council.”
