25 Jan Writtle University College launches Rugby Academy

Writtle University College (WUC) is celebrating the launch of a new Rugby Academy.

The exciting programme is intended for post-16 male learners and is already accepting applications for September 2022.
Students will have access to elite coaching while learning from lecturers with significant industry experience.

Coach Chris Green said: “I am delighted to be joining the College and look forward to forming strong partnerships with local clubs and educational environments with my experience in both fields. Not only will we be looking to provide a high-level rugby specific program but also on developing the athlete and movement competences.”
Students will study a two-year course Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development, while taking part in training sessions and games with the rugby academy.

Amy Grimsey, Writtle University College’s Sport Development & Engagement Manager said: “We’re pleased to be working with Chris Green to offer learners a combination of elite-level training and academic qualifications. The Rugby Academy is ideal for those looking to further develop their skills within the sport and will offer an excellent first step for anyone interested in a career within the industry.”

The course has been developed in consultation with professional bodies and employers and will provide a step towards coaching and development roles. They’ll receive two skills training sessions, two strength and conditioning sessions and one recovery session per week, and take part in Wednesday fixtures, as part of the AoC League.

WUC’s Head of Sport, Greg Deacon, said: “The Rugby Academy is an exciting new addition to Writtle University College’s thriving sport department. It’s one of a number of recent developments, including a thriving football academy and 3×3 basketball facilities. We’re proud to offer sport courses at college and university level, and provide a wide range of facilities.”

WUC’s spacious countryside estate features a gym, extensive playing fields, equestrian facilities, bike trails, sports fields, indoor courts and a reservoir with potential for further outdoor sporting activities.
The campus sits just two miles from Chelmsford and offers students a free shuttle bus service to and from the city during College term times.
