Work starts on new South Essex Gymnastics Club facility

23 Feb Work starts on new South Essex Gymnastics Club facility

Gymnasts in Basildon will soon be benefitting from a brand new facility thanks to the partnership between Basildon Council, a local club and leisure centre.

South Essex Gymnastics Club (SEGC) is introducing a new £230,000 facility at Everyone Active’s Eversley Leisure Centre, in Crest Avenue, Pitsea, to support more people across the borough to get active.

The current sports hall is being transformed into a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility that will add to the club’s base at Basildon Sporting Village. It will offer the same expert coaching to meet the demand of those who are waiting to join the club, and encourage more young people to follow in the footsteps of its star members, including Max Whitlock, Amy Tinkler, Reiss Beckford and Brinn Bevan.

SEGC is aiming to make the sport more accessible to people across Basildon, especially those from the local community in Pitsea and surrounding wards, who will be offered priority membership.

Verity Adams, assistant director of coaching at SEGC, said: “We are delighted that work has begun on this project. The new facility will allow us to reduce our waiting list and give more children and adults in the community the opportunity to experience gymnastics.

“We are looking forward to introducing new classes to South Essex Gymnastics Club and providing more opportunities for everyone, regardless of their age or ability, to get involved.”

The new facility forms part of a wider redevelopment of Eversley Leisure Centre, which has seen Basildon Borough Council invest a further £570,000 to install new outdoor 3G football pitches, the first of their kind in Pitsea.
