27 Feb Wickford and Billericay friends groups benefit from grant funding
Two community groups have been successful in winning funding from Basildon Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Development Grant scheme.
Newly formed Friends of Wickford Memorial Park and the established Friends of Lake Meadows groups each put in successful bids for funding.
Friends of Wickford Memorial Park were awarded £1,000 and Friends of Lake Meadows will be awarded £504.67.
Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison said: “I am pleased that both groups made successful bids that will help them further their efforts to maintain and improve both of these great parks. The Friends of Lake Meadows gardening group consists of 22 volunteers, who last year gave 1000 hours of voluntary work.
“Members of both groups will benefit physically and mentally by keeping active whilst doing work that enhances their local areas and helps the parks to reach their full potential for thousands of visitors each year.”
A number of work parties have taken place since the Friends of Wickford Memorial Park group formed and many ideas have been discussed around improvements to the park. This funding will enable the group to purchase equipment to undertake gardening and maintenance works, promoting physical activity amongst members and providing an environment for members to meet and make friends.
Formed in 2012 Friends of Lake Meadows will use their funding to purchase workwear and equipment to raise awareness of the group and to help them continue to care for the park.
