09 May Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson says tax cuts will lead to election victory
TORY deputy chairman Lee Anderson says tax cuts will ensure that the party wins the next general election.
He told GB News: “I live in the real world, and yes, they [voters] are a little bit grumpy. Yes, they are a little bit fed up, but the sentiment is this. They are saying to me, ‘come on Lee, get your party to get its act together, we want to vote for you again next year’.
“I suspect that many of our voters last week actually stayed at home…but if you want to sell a Conservative dream, the Conservative dream is quite simple, it is putting more money in people’s pockets.
“And if we get that right next year with tax cuts and incentives for small businesses etc, then we should be okay. I absolutely believe that 100%.”
In a discussion with Patrick Christys, he said: “Rishi is no mug. This is a man who in 2015 came into Parliament and is now a Prime Minister of this great country.
“That is a very clever man, he is a businessman. He’s got a good head on his shoulders. And, yes, we have been spending a little bit too much money over the past few years with the pandemic and, obviously, the war in Ukraine.
“The tax situation is not ideal. It was supposed to be a low tax party. That’s what we want to be but I’m pretty sure, I’m pretty confident now that Rishi has steadied the ship, that throughout this year and early next year, there will be tax cuts and we will be taking the Conservative dream to the Great British people.”
On the local elections, the Ashfield MP added: “I think people are fed up not just with the main political parties, they are fed up full stop, and when we look at the turnout at the local elections last week, in some parts of Ashfield it was just 20%.
“You’re lucky anywhere in the country to find over 30%, so 70% of the actual electorate are not going out to vote, they’re a little bit fed up…
“They’re looking for an excuse to vote for us again. And if we get things right over the next year or so, then they will vote for us again. So I’m quite quietly confident that in areas like mine we will retain these seats.”
