29 Jan Thurrock Conservatives weigh in on Thurrock Independents Party
Last week 17 Ukip councillors in Thurrock quit the party and formed a new group dubbed Thurrock Independents.
Today Thurrock Conservatives issued a statement saying “This is not a new party, it’s 17 UKIP councillors trying to kid Thurrock residents they are something different in the vain attempt to try and keep their seats in May. What happened to their promise to resign and force by elections as they were elected as UKIP councillors and have now apparently abandoned that party? TIP is the same people, from the same party, under a slightly different banner”
Last week, Thurrock Council confirmed there wouldn’t be a By-Election with a council spokesperson saying “The Council can confirm that the constitution does not require a by-election when a councillor chooses to change political parties.”
The new party replaces Ukip as the official opposition on the Tory-controlled council.
