Stephen Metcalfe MP pays tribute to Sir David Amess MP.

Along with many, I am devastated and shocked to my core that Sir David Amess has been murdered. David was a dedicated public servant carrying out his normal duties at a constituency surgery.

Becoming one of Westminster’s longest serving MPs, David served as the Member of Parliament for Basildon between 1983 and 1997 and Southend West between 1997 to 2021.

David was a true champion for animal welfare, supporting various important pieces of legislation over the years, and focused on a whole range of issues such as fuel poverty, human rights and endometriosis. David set up the APPG on endometriosis in 2018 and spent many years raising awareness of the condition in order to help sufferers get support.

Following years of hard work and dedication, he was knighted in 2015 for political and public service.

In a family statement it was said: “So, we ask people to set aside their differences and show kindness and love to all. This is the only way forward. Set aside hatred and work towards togetherness…”

I know good work has begun here and many have come together over the past few days, I certainly hope this will continue.

I send my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Julia, his children, members of staff and all his family and friends.

David will certainly be missed by all who knew him, across Essex and Parliament. I really cannot believe this could happen to such a kind and considerate man.

I am pleased that Southend will become a city – a fine tribute to a remarkable man.
