22 Sep Stephen Metcalfe MP meets with Pitsea and Vange Scouts
Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, met with local scouts to see how they have adapted to the challenges presented by coronavirus.
Recently, Stephen met with the 1st Pitsea and Vange Scout Group to see how they have been progressing since the coronavirus outbreak and to hear about the measures they have taken to adapt to the challenges the pandemic presented.
The last 18 months have proved difficult for many, with no face-to-face meetings, the local scout leaders had to adapt existing programme ideas to virtual media. Even though this was a challenge, exciting virtual opportunities did arise. An example of this was when the cubs joined the District for a virtual camp, where they were able to make their own dens to sleep in and participate in a range of other engaging activities.
More widely, the Scout Association have decided to introduce a new section for 4-5 year olds, called Squirrels, and 1st Pitsea and Vange have been selected to become part of a pilot scheme, allowing even more people to benefit from the opportunities scouting presents.
Action nationally and locally have ensured that young people have remained engaged and connected with their local scouting group, ensuring the scouting family has remained ready to face the future with optimism.
Stephen added: “I was delighted to attend the AGM of 1st Pitsea & Vange Scout Group and was interested to learn how they have adapted during the coronavirus outbreak.
The pandemic has proved to be a tough period for many, but in light of these challenges the local scouts have been working to adapt and make use of new opportunities. I wish the team every success and look forward to seeing them inspire future generations with #SkillsForLife.”
