01 May Stephen Metcalfe MP Celebrates Work of Tilbury Port Chaplain
Stephen Metcalfe MP was at Tilbury docks recently to hear about the work of local maritime charity Sailors’ Society.
The MP went on board ships to meet seafarers with the charity’s Tilbury port chaplain Frans Sahetapy.
The South Basildon and East Thurrock MP said: “Tilbury port handles around 3000 ships each year and contributes massively to London’s economy but most people often don’t think about the hundreds of thousands of seafarers who come through the port and make all this possible.
“I’m grateful to Frans for taking me on a ship visit and showing me the invaluable welfare work Sailors’ Society provides to seafarers visiting Southampton.”
Each year 16 million tonnes of commodities come through Tilbury port.
