27 Nov Stephen Metcalfe MP calls on Small Businesses to access Business Rate Relief Schemes
Stephen Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon & East Thurrock, is calling on local businesses to contact their local authority to check to see if they have been re-billed correctly following the implementation of the Government’s Business Rate Relief Schemes.
The business rates revaluation took effect in England from April 2017. To support the transition a £3.6 billion relief fund was announced in November 2016. The Government is now providing £435 million of further support for businesses facing significant increases in bills from the English business rates system. The three help schemes include:
An annual bill cap for any ratepayer loosing Small Business Rate Relief as a result of the revaluation to £600; a £300 million Discretionary fund for hard-presses businesses facing higher bills; and £1,000 discount for pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000.
Currently in South Basildon & East Thurrock Basildon Borough Council have begun rebilling the businesses under the Supporting Small Business and Support for Pubs schemes; whereas Thurrock Council have begun rebilling all three schemes.
