21 Jul Stephen Metcalfe MP Asks The Housing Secretary About Building Safety Issues
Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, has asked the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government about building safety issues.
During Housing Questions, Stephen asked the Secretary of State what advice can be given to his constituents in South Basildon & East Thurrock who are currently unable to sell or let their properties because of building safety issues such as missing fire breaks.
Stephen Metcalfe said: “As my Rt Hon Friend will know, there are building safety issues other than cladding, including missing fire breaks. Can my Rt Hon Friend therefore tell me what advice I can give to my constituents who are currently unable to sell or let properties that they brought in good faith, only a matter of a few years ago.”
Secretary of State for Housing, Robert Jenrick, said: “Shoddy workmanship of that kind is disgraceful and developers should step up and pay for any works that are required. We are changing the law through the Building Safety Bill to give any homeowner a longer period of redress to take action against developers and builders who build poorly, and it’s also important as I said in answer to an earlier question that we do instil that proportionate response because some of the works, not all, but some of the works that leaseholders are being asked to pay for, for that kind of non-cladding issue are unnecessary and we will be saying more about this soon.”
