21 Jun Stansted Airport’s multi-storey car park the focus of large-scale emergency exercise
A live exercise staged to test emergency procedures at London Stansted’s new 2,700 space multi-storey car park has been declared a success.
More than 60 staff and volunteers took part in the exercise which tested the response to how the airport would tackle an emergency situation inside the car park ahead of its opening next month.
It was staged by MAG Stansted and involved the airport’s fire service, Essex Police, Essex Fire and Rescue, East of England Ambulance Service and the Casualties Union.
London Stansted Development Lead James Bruce, who co-ordinated the exercise, said:
“Exercise Hulk gave us an excellent opportunity to continue our work with all the emergency services to test how we collectively respond to an incident in our new multi-storey car park.
“The exercise presented a challenge you hope you would never actually have to experience, but it’s reassuring to know that if we were to have a major incident in the new multi-storey car park we have the plans, procedures and teams in place to deal with it.”
The mock incident, which took place between 10am and 3pm on June 20, featured a car fire with volunteer casualties wearing make-up depicting life-like injuries.
The six-storey car park, just a short walk from the main terminal, will open on July 1 and is the first multi-storey to be built at the airport.
