06 Feb Southend Hospital Seeks Volunteers For Discharge Lounge
Southend Hospital need some helping hands to help with outpatients, could this be you ?
Could you spare a couple of hours to make a cuppa, run errands and have a chat with patients waiting to go home from Southend Hospital?
The hospital’s Discharge Lounge – the place patients go after they have been discharged from the ward and are waiting to be picked up and taken home – is busier than ever as bed pressures on the hospital mount.
Voluntary Services Manager, Jane O’Connell, said: “It’s a nice varied role and provides contact with lots of different people. Any help someone can give is much appreciated by our staff.”
Duties include returning the notes to the relevant ward when the patient leaves the lounge, chatting to patients, picking up prescriptions from the hospital pharmacy, and other tasks such as ringing wards, under the guidance of the nurse in the lounge.
Discharge lounge volunteer, Ruth Page, 57, from Leigh-on-Sea, works a Thursday afternoon stint and loves her role. Ruth said: “It’s a pleasure to help people and be useful.”
