24 Aug Schools Minister: ‘We are returning to 2019 grading, it is important to get back to normal.’
SCHOOLS Minister Nick Gibb says students should be congratulated as this year’s GCSE results were released.
Speaking to GB News, ahead of the results coming out Mr Gibb said: “After what they have been through with Covid and the pandemic we should offer our congratulations for all they achieve.
“They have been through a lot, particularly in years eight and nine. They’ll be nervously collecting their results today but congratulations to them. And thank you to the teachers for the hard work that they put in preparing young people.
“We are returning to 2019 grading and it’s important to get back to normal.”
Defending the fact England has a different system than other UK nations he added: “We have a devolved system of government in the United Kingdom, and it’s certainly devolved in education policy. That’s been the case for many years. They have different exam boards. .
Pupils won’t be at a disadvantage. Six forms or wherever they’re going to go next and the next phase of their education they take that into account, they know there’s a different approach to grading and we saw that last week with a-levels that universities are aware of the different approaches to these qualifications in different parts of the United Kingdom.
“And the same applies to GCSE and most young people will transition to an institution local to them so most of the other students will be taking the same England based exam boards as well.”
