Poppies fall from Harlow Civic Centre balcony as public display unveiled

27 Oct Poppies fall from Harlow Civic Centre balcony as public display unveiled

A display of poppies falling from the balcony of Harlow’s Civic Centre has been unveiled today.

The display is a poignant tribute to the soldiers who have lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts. The tribute is made up of over 3,000 handmade knitted and crocheted poppies and was created by Harlow-based artist Val Fitz-John. Val was supported by Harlow Council and Harlow Royal British Legion and a number of residents helped make the poppies and sewed them on netting used for the display.

The tribute was unveiled this afternoon with council staff helping to fix the display in place. The finished result is a stunning tribute and follows months of hard work.

A second display of poppies made up of over 600 recycled drink bottles, which will float in the pond outside the Civic Centre, is due to be unveiled this weekend.

Harlow Council would like to thank Val and all the volunteers involved who made this wonderful tribute possible.
