23 Aug #Ongar: Repair work set to start on Moreton Bridge
A listed bridge on the outskirts of Chipping Ongar is set to be protected for years to come thanks to specialist repair work by Essex County Council.
Repair works to Moreton Bridge, a Grade II listed structure, are to begin on Tuesday, 30 August for around six weeks resulting in a temporary closure of Bridge Road.
The works include rebuilding and repairing cracked sections of the bridge parapets and main bridge arch. At the same time, carriageway re-alignment works will be undertaken to improve the passage of vehicles over the bridge as well as installation of new bollards for extra protection.
A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: “These repairs are essential to preserve Moreton Bridge for the future. We are taking advantage of the temporary closure required to make additional improvements to protect the structure.
“As the bridge has listed status, traditional materials and methods, including the use of handmade bricks and lime mortar, will be used to maintain its character.”
A signed diversion will be in place during the temporary closure. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists during the works.
