11 Jun NHS in mid and south Essex offers access to the NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme
The NHS in mid and south Essex is delighted to be delivering an innovative pilot programme which provides a total diet replacement treatment for some patients who are living with Type 2 Diabetes and are overweight.
More than 2000 patients with Type 2 Diabetes in England have already benefitted from the programme, improved their health and lost on average 13Kg in the first three months.
The programme is based on two large studies which showed that, as a result of this treatment, people could improve their diabetes control, reduce diabetes related medication and even achieve remission (no longer have diabetes).
The year-long programme, which is fully supported and monitored by expert clinicians and coaches throughout, kickstarts weightloss using total diet replacement products including soups and shakes consisting of up to 900 calories a day for up to 12 weeks. After this, a carefully managed plan reintroduces healthy, nutritious food and participants can track their progress through virtual one-to-ones, group sessions or digital support – to help them maintain a healthier weight.
The programme is available to some adults living within Mid and South Essex, aged 18 – 65 years, who have a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes within the last 6 years and are overweight. Other eligibility criteria do apply in order to be referred to the service. If you would like to know more or would like to find out whether you are eligible for the programme please do make an appointment or discuss the programme with your GP practice at your next planned diabetes review.
