28 Feb Marks and Spencer store in Basildon to close
Marks and Spencer store in Basildon town centre is set to close in April
Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Chairman of Basildon Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, has reacted to news that Marks and Spencer in Basildon town centre will close in April.
He said: “I am very saddened and disappointed by this news and I feel for the staff who are directly affected at this difficult time. I recognise the commitment that M&S has made to offer redeployment and I hope that all staff are able to be found alternative suitable employment.
“It is clear that this closure is driven by strategic business decisions taken at M&S head office. The future for Basildon town centre continues to look bright. I am excited by the impending new market, by the progress on the cinema-led regeneration of East Square, the investment we have recently secured to support residential development and by other schemes that will improve footfall in the town centre, for example by the planned relocation of a number of outpatient and diagnostic services into the town centre by Basildon Hospital and the new South Essex College Campus.
Basildon council will now talk with M&S and the store’s landowner regarding the future use of the site and support in every way we can efforts to secure new tenants as soon as possible.
