17 Apr Local MP visits UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge hopefuls
Stephen Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock, visited Woodlands School last Friday (13th April 2018) to congratulate them on making it through to the South East regional finals of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge.
Teams from St Cleres School in Stanford-le-Hope and Woodlands School in Basildon (pictured) are competing this Thursday (19 April) in the South East regional finals of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge with the hope of making it through to the National final for a chance to compete at the international final hosted at the Farnborough International Airshow in July.
The competition requires teams to build a rocket that has a clear take-off, achieves the highest possible altitude and lands its crew – two eggs – safely on the ground without any cracking.
As the UK has world-leading Aerospace and Space industries the Rocketry Challenge has been a great way for 11-18-year-olds to learn more about maths and science and discover exciting future career opportunities.
Stephen said“I am over the moon for both Woodlands and St Cleres Schools for making it to the regional finals of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge! This gives them chance to show the South East just how skilled we are at engineering in South Essex helping inspire a future generation of mathematicians and scientists”.
