17 Jul Local MP Stephen Metcalfe’s Engineering Showcase Inspires a Future Generation of Engineers
Stephen Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon & East Thurrock, teamed up with the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, to host a local Engineering Showcase in Basildon Town Centre on Saturday 14 July 2018.
The Showcase brought government, industry and the public together to challenge stereotypes and explore the variety, creativity and opportunity of engineering and help inspire a new and more diverse generation of engineers.
Stephen Metcalfe said “I am incredibly grateful to all those who exhibited and the families who attended to explore engineering. I am delighted that many found it an informative, inspiring event and took a closer look at what engineering means in the 21st Century. Modern engineers should comprise of men and women of all races and ethnicities. I thank the people of Basildon for coming together for this important Year of Engineering”.
2018 is the Year of Engineering – a cross-government initiative to raise the profile of engineering among young people aged 7-16, their parents and teachers. There is incredible activity across a national and local level to encourage young people into the sector.
Too often engineering can be misunderstood– it is estimated only a third of people know what engineers actually do. The showcase is designed to change those perceptions and open people’s eyes to the importance engineering plays in our day to day lives.
