28 Aug Local Green MEP warns of death of democracy if PM blocks Parliament over Brexit
The Green Party Member of the European Parliament for the East of England Catherine Rowett has hit out at Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan to prorogue – or suspend – Parliament in order to force through Brexit on 31 October without MPs having a chance to prevent it.
Reacting to the Government’s plans, Catherine Rowett said, “Boris Johnson’s Brexit scheme would spell death for democracy in this country. By suspending Parliament, Johnson would essentially be shutting the door to elected representatives of the people so he can push through his version of Brexit without accountability.
“Indeed we would cease to have a Government even in name, as Johnson and his cabal would be ruling without commanding a majority in a free Parliament.”
“If Johnson goes ahead with this move, he should expect serious resistance. This country will not tolerate being ridden over roughshod by his so-called Government and we will continue to fight for the value of democracy, whatever it takes.”
