05 Oct Have your say on proposed changes to Basildon Council’s tax support
Residents are being urged to share their views on how Basildon Council should maintain Council Tax support in 2019/20.
Currently, working-age applicants can receive a maximum reduction of 75% of their total Council Tax bill. Pensioners are protected from support restrictions, meaning they are eligible to receive a reduction of up to 100%.
Basildon Council is proposing a number of options to bring the Council Tax Support Scheme in line with recent changes made by the Government to Housing Benefit and Universal Credit. These include reducing the maximum discount for work-age applicants to 70% or introducing a new income banding scheme which will assess households on their net income to allocate reductions accordingly.
A public consultation is taking place until Sunday 14 October, with residents asked how they feel about the options and a number of proposed key features included in them.
