16 Jun Greater Anglia to Sponsor Better Transport Week 2025
The main train operator for the East of England, Greater Anglia, has today (Monday 16 June) announced that it will be a lead sponsor of Better Transport Week 2025.
Better Transport Week runs between Monday 16 and Sunday 22 June. It is a national celebration of sustainable transport and aims to promote the wide range of benefits of public transport, shared mobility, walking, and cycling to the public and encourage more people to travel sustainably.
The theme for Better Transport Week 2025 is how better transport can help connect communities and bring people together.
Aside from walking or cycling, rail is recognised as being the most environmentally friendly form of transport. Greater Anglia is leading the way in creating an attractive, clean, and green network.
All of Greater Anglia’s services are now operated by new, high quality, higher capacity, more reliable, more accessible and more energy-efficient trains, including bi-mode trains for regional routes where train services need to switch between diesel and electric power on route.
These new trains have already helped the company deliver record-breaking performance. Recent figures released showed Greater Anglia as the best-performing train operator in the UK for over 2 years. Annual performance for the 12 months to 31 March 2025 was at an impressive 94.1% – using the long-standing public performance measure (PPM), which measures arrival times at destination stations for each service.
Across Better Transport Week 2025, Greater Anglia will be releasing content that focuses on the value of the railway, and how the railway can create thriving places and stronger communities while helping to build a fairer future for everyone.
Matthew Wakefield, Greater Anglia’s Safety, Security & Sustainability Director, said:
“Greater Anglia is really proud to be a lead sponsor of Better Transport Week 2025.
“Rail is already recognised as being the most environmentally friendly form of transport apart from walking or cycling, and Greater Anglia is leading the way in creating an attractive, clean and green network with brand new trains operating all of our services.
“By promoting train travel and supporting further investment in wider improvements to the rail network, we can ensure rail contributes fully to greener transport choices, in support of our national climate change goals.”
Greater Anglia is one of more than 100 organisations supporting Better Transport Week 2025, including local authorities, the transport industry, NGOs, businesses, and passenger groups.
Brogan McPherson from Campaign for Better Transport which organises Better Transport Week, said:
“We’re delighted to have Greater Anglia on board for this year’s Better Transport Week. Good public transport networks help connect us to the people we love, the things we need and the places that matter, creating thriving places and stronger communities, and building a fairer future for everyone. Definitely something worth celebrating!”
The train operator has also been working to minimise its carbon emissions and become an even more sustainable organisation. As well as introducing more energy-efficient trains, since 2019, Greater Anglia has cut waste and increased recycling. The operator also works with partners and communities on projects to improve sustainability, such as the Station Adoption scheme.
The train company, which serves six counties, has more than 300 volunteer station adopters on its network to help keep stations looking their best, tending to flowerbeds and station gardens, and keeping things vibrant and welcoming for passengers and local wildlife alike.
Greater Anglia is also pleased to announce a photo competition on Instagram to celebrate Better Transport Week 2025. Passengers are encouraged to share their favourite photos from the Greater Anglia network and explain why they love train travel to be in with a chance to win a pair of travel passes to use for travel on the Greater Anglia network. All entries must use the hashtag #GreaterAngliaBTW. Details on what to do and how to enter can be found here.
