23 Oct Fulham, Tottenham, and England legend Alan Mullery pays tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton
SIR Bobby Charlton’s former colleague Allen Mullery said he was “absolutely fantastic” and a joy to play with.
He told GB News: “One or two or three times I’ve tried to kill him, but he got away with it. I mean, he was absolutely fantastic. To play with him was a joy. To play against him was very difficult.
“But he was that type of guy. He wasn’t flashy, he wasn’t this, he wasn’t that, he was just a genuine man, born just outside Newcastle with his brother Jack.
“He would stop and talk to people. I’ve seen him going to games – when we’re playing Manchester United, there would be 100 people waiting for him to sign autographs before the game…people would love him everywhere he went.”
Speaking during Breakfast with Pip Tomson and Ellie Costello, he continued: “We could go throughout the world to somewhere where we’ve never been or seen and somebody would ask about Bobby Charlton.
“This has never happened with other people. This man was special, really, really special.
“And you know when I look at the teams today, I can’t see anybody doing anything like this man did for Manchester United and coming out of a plane crash with his friends dying. Unbelievable footballer and an unbelievable man.”
He added: “There are some pictures that I’ve seen just recently of him after in the hospital and there’s bandages all over him. And inside about three weeks he wanted to play again.”
