17 Oct Former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, David Mellor, says Liz Truss is ‘undoubtedly toast’.
DAVID Mellor says Liz Truss has no chance of turning things around as PM.
Speaking to GB News he said: “As the Good Book says, she’s trying to prove there’s life after death…and there isn’t. She has no chance whatsoever of succeeding in rescuing her Premiership. If the Conservative Party has any capability to save itself, they will have to tell her to go.
“The other thing is, it’s quite interesting that the Conservative Party was not able to organise the last leadership election. It spent weeks whittling down the number of candidates and then it went to the Conservative Party membership.
“I first joined the Conservative Party 55 years ago. The Conservative Party is supposed to know how to run the country. What is quite clear is the Conservative Party doesn’t even know how to run itself at the moment. How can they?
“Firstly, Truss has got to go and secondly, they cannot have a shambles, like this ridiculous prolonged leadership election. They’ve got to do something very quickly. And if they can’t organise themselves, then they’ve got real problems. You know what all the old jokes come back into fashion.
“I just think history repeats itself really. The first is a tragedy, the second is a farce, and this is a farce. Bring down the curtain. We’ve had enough of this.”
Echoing a similar sentiment was MP Peter Dowd.
Mr Dowd told GB News: “I’m not concerned about the personal circumstances of both the Prime Minister and the former Chancellor. I’m concerned about the difficulty that the policies have got the country in. We’re already in a pretty grim situation.
“Seven million people are on NHS waiting lists, local authorities’ budgets have been slashed by 50% and now Jeremy Hunt is saying they’re going to be slashed even further.
“I’m concerned about how their policies are affecting and impacting the lives of thousands and thousands of people in my constituency and millions across the country. They knew this was going to happen. They were warned about this three, or four weeks ago, and they just went ahead in this inappropriate and outrageous way.”
He added: “We’ve had 12 years of this government, and they’ve had the lowest growth for many of those years. The policies that they’ve been pushing since George Osborne, have maintained these levels of low growth.
“So the idea that you just continue what’s been happening for the past 12 years, seems to me to be quite silly to continue to do that. It’s daft. Why would you do that? I think there has to be a complete change of approach to the economy. “
