10 Jul Former Basildon town centre Post Office block set for flats and restaurants
Basildon councillors are to be asked to start the process that could lead to the former Post Office block in Basildon town centre’s East Square being replaced with a mixed development of flats, shops and restaurants.
The council acquired the block in June 2019 and had already secured planning consent to demolish the building as part of the wider East Square project, which will see a 10-screen cinema open by autumn 2021. Standing just next door, the former Post Office block is a priority site for development.
The first meeting of the council’s new Town Centre Revival Committee on Wednesday 17 July will consider a proposal to start the development of concept plans for the block and discuss the development of a new masterplan for Basildon town centre.
“I have been overwhelmed with the reaction from the private sector towards our town centre development plans,” said Council Leader Gavin Callaghan, who will chair the Town Centre Revival Committee. “The interest in Basildon is huge. There is no doubt that town centres are facing their biggest challenges to date, but with bold, transformational interventions we can bring about long lasting, positive change.
“A new masterplan that reflects these ambitions will ensure that Basildon town centre has a bright future.”
The committee will also discuss the progress being made as part of the continued regeneration of Wickford Town Centre and Billericay public realm work.
