Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has criticised President Trump for sharing footage of a man who was mauled to death by a tiger.
Speaking on GB News, he said: “President Donald Trump has caused outrage by sharing footage of the man mauled to death by Tiger in Yorkshire, captioned ‘Don’t ever mess with nature.’
“President Trump has also shared an AI-generated video of battling the same tiger himself.
“The family of 23-year-old William Chapman have revealed he suffered from significant mental illness, and so the circulation of footage relating to his death is causing them severe distress.
“But where does the line between dark humour, satire, and commentary end, and grace and decency begin?
“This seems to me to be extremely distasteful for the president to do it, but also this idea that it’s something to laugh about.
“It seems to me it all changed once we knew the name of the man. That when it was an unidentified person, it was a different type of story.
“But once his name was in the press and you knew that he had a family and so on, joking about it just seemed to me to become a terrible thing to do. It changed it.
“I’m not in favour of this particular video. I am otherwise rather a fan of Donald Trump’s. But it appeals to his electoral base, and in a democracy you’ve got to appeal to that.”
