Essex & Suffolk Water has pledged to be a zero waste company by 2025 as part of its new business plan.
The water company has submitted its plans for the future of water and waste water services to the industry regulator OFWAT and will find out in the next couple of weeks whether or not they get the green light to action them.
Among the new business plan proposals are a raft of ambitious and industry leading targets that focus on improving the environment in the region and creating a real step change in how the company carries out its environmental activities.
The plans, which will cover 2020 to 2025, will see Essex & Suffolk Water:
Create Zero avoidable waste – Essex & Suffolk Water will deliver zero avoidable waste by 2025. This will mean eliminating, re-using or recycling 90% of waste from our operations, and working with partners to contribute to the circular economy in their regions.
Become Carbon Neutral – Essex & Suffolk Water will be carbon neutral by 2027. Northumbrian Water Group, the parent company of ESW, has already reduced operation emissions by 46% since 2009. As well as recycling 100% of their sewage sludge into energy through advanced anaerobic digestion, the group will further improve their energy efficiency, purchase zero-carbon electricity and make all new fleet vehicles zero emission from 2024
