A local artist won the biggest drawing prize in the UK with a felt pen drawing!
Gary Lawrence from Wethersfield, Essex has won the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2017 with a 2.5m x 2.5m felt pen and bright yellow poster paint drawing.
This is the first time in the history of the award that an artist has won the First Prize twice. Gary first won in 2011 with a 1.8m x 1.2m piece produced using a packet of 10 Tesco Value budget biros.
This year, Gary’s winning piece is even bigger, again produced using budget materials. This, then, is a celebration of drawing as the most basic and honest of art forms, available to anybody with an imagination.
