27 Jun “It’s been emotional.” writes @TimboADI as he dishes out his thoughts on the EU
To quote Vinny Jones “It’s been emotional.” I’ve heard so many reasons for leaving and for staying. From economically we’re better off in better off out I worry that I’ll have to pay more for my holiday to we’re full up and we want to get rid of the foreigners. But I’ve met very few who could actually tell you anything other than the regurgitated rhetoric of the tabloids or the endless prattle on daytime telly or question time.
I understand the emotional appeal of Europe. I love Europe particularly the Nederlands & Denmark where I have spent a lot of time, but to say that you are supporting the EU because you love Europe is rather like saying that you support FIFA because you love football! It’s easy to be lulled into thinking of the EU As a force to protect the interests of the common man, what we choose not to see is the EU that has developed under our noses.
A racket that takes money from low & middle income people & gives it to the the rich & the privileged & to the corporations.
Lord Rose for the remain camp said “If we leave, wages will get higher & food will get cheaper.” He clearly saw that as a bad thing! How can that be bad for people on low incomes? Both Lord Rose & Lord Ashdown saw these as terrible developments. I wonder why?
Ask yourself why the likes of Morgan Stanley, J.P Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs etc poured so much money into the remain campaign, because they love regulation lots of regulation, the more the better! Why? Because they can easily afford the compliance whereas their less well off competitors will struggle. No wonder TTIP is shrouded in secrecy, the ultimate regulatory instrument which the commission will sign whether we want it or not. The banks have captured the Brussels machine, and used it to raise barriers to entry. Great news for cartels & multinationals, very bad news for innovators startups & small businesses.
In the last decade our exports to the EU have fallen from 55 to 45% of our G N P. Where’s that figure going to be in another ten years? What is the point of merging politically with our neighbours for an ever falling share of an unprofitable market? Corporatism suffocates capitalism. Fact of life. Never confuse the two, although the big boys will insist they’re one and the same. In order for our nation to flourish we need to be where our customers are, out in the rest of the world. Europe isn’t going anywhere indeed now brexit is a reality, the noises coming from Berlin Paris & Brussels are sounding more conciliatory by the day.
The sky didn’t fall, the dollar exchange is about 1.34 (about 74p in English money) and nobody’s turned into a toad………. Yet. In the words of the American economist Dick Tuck:-
“The people have spoken, the bastards!” Now it’s time to stop bleating and get on with it.
