From David Beckham’s iconic mohawk, Rapinoe’s pink hair and Gazza’s Italia ’90 skin fade to Roberto Baggio’s “Divine Ponytail” and Ronaldo’s unforgettable 2002 triangle fringe, football haircuts have become part of World Cup folklore.
These legendary, nostalgic looks remain one of football’s most enduring expressions of fandom, with new research commissioned by viagogo revealing nearly half (46%) of Gen Z football fans say they asked their parents for a footballer-inspired haircut growing up, while the same number say sporting a player’s hairstyle makes them feel more connected to their hero.
The research also found that 67% of Gen Z supporters believe iconic World Cup haircuts are as memorable as the matches themselves, while more than a third (36%) would commit to a World Cup-inspired haircut if their country won the tournament.
When it comes to football’s most memorable trims, David Beckham’s unforgettable 2002 World Cup mohawk topped the rankings, ahead of Paul Gascoigne’s Italia ’90 crop, Neymar’s blonde “spaghetti top” and Ronaldo’s famous “cascão” fringe.
To celebrate FIFA World Cup 2026™ and bring fans closer to the culture, nostalgia and personalities that define the tournament, viagogo – the world’s leading live event ticket marketplace – is launching World Cuts, a one-of-a-kind barber shop experience recreating some of football’s most iconic hairstyles.
The free two-day experience will take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June at Ruffians Barber Shop in Shoreditch, where fans can choose their footballing hero and leave transformed with a legendary tournament-inspired look.
From Carlos Valderrama’s peroxide curls and Glenn Hoddle’s mullet to Ronaldo’s outrageous 2002 “cascão”, expert stylists, wigs and creative barbering techniques will bring football’s most iconic barnets back to life. For fans not ready to commit permanently, temporary transformations, wigs and styling options will also be available.
Alongside their makeover, fans can enjoy live Q&As with football manager and I’m A Celebrity winner Harry Redknapp on Saturday 20 June, followed by former England international and World In Motion star John Barnes on Sunday 21 June.
To mark the launch, Manchester United superfan United Strand (Frank Ilett) has finally ended his hair-growing marathon, despite the ‘Red Devils’ falling short of five consecutive victories. Having vowed not to cut his hair until United won five games in a row, Strand has now swapped his lengthy locks for three iconic World Cup-inspired looks, recreating the famous hairstyles of Carlos Valderrama, David Beckham and Chris Waddle.
Viral football superfan Frank Ilett said: “I know a thing or two about commitment – especially when it comes to haircuts – so I was thrilled to team up with viagogo’s World Cuts to experience three incredible transformations. It’s every fan’s dream to feel closer to their heroes, and I remember growing up with posters of Beckham on my wall, always wanting to play like him and look like him too. I may not have his iconic right foot, but at least now I’ve got the mohawk – even if it’s only temporary!”
Further research found, one in five (22%) England fans would commit to a football inspired hair cut if it meant breaking the 60-year duck of not winning the tournament.
In fact, one in four would agree to an England Manager, Thomas Tuchel trim, if it guaranteed World Cup glory
Raj Beri, Chief Business Officer at viagogo, said: “The World Cup is bigger than football – it’s about the emotion, nostalgia and rituals that bring fans together. While many fans won’t be travelling to the tournament this summer, their passion for the game remains as strong as ever. World Cuts is about giving supporters another way to feel part of the action, celebrate the culture that surrounds the World Cup and express their connection to the players and teams they love – one trim at a time.”
Think you’ve got the courage for a Beckham mohawk? World Cuts opens on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June at Ruffians Shoreditch, London.
