The impact of the cost-of-living crisis has had wide-reaching consequences for commuters, with a fifth of UK workers spending over 20% of their monthly salary on commuting, according to recent research by Britain’s leading e-bike engineers – Swytch Technology. This is particularly true in popular commuter hubs such as London, Manchester and Birmingham which were ranked by the Clean Cities Campaign as the three of the most expensive cities in Europe last year. Faced with a growing financial hole in our pockets caused by commuting, cheaper alternatives such as cycling are more desirable than ever.
Aiming to dramatically decrease the price of inner-city commutes, UK startup Swytch Technology has engineered a solution to help Brits save thousands amidst such a challenging economic period having devised a smartphone-sized device allowing any bike to be made electric for under £450.
In London, the cost of an annual travel-card from TFL Zone 4 – the zone where the most commuter journeys to the Capital start – stands at £2340, meaning that ‘making the Swytch’ could save commuters a staggering £1,891 whilst also reaping the physical and mental health benefits of an active commute. The world-first pocket-sized battery costs just 0.4 pence per mile to run, whilst also representing a more sustainable option than public transport. With an estimated 24% of Brits saying they have a bike rusting in storage – according to Swytch – the ability to upcycle any bike represents a great cost-cutting opportunity.
