Council to invest millions into the refurbishment of Brooke House

09 Mar Council to invest millions into the refurbishment of Brooke House

An iconic Basildon tower block is set to undergo a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Grade II listed Brooke House, in Town Square, Basildon is set to get a full revamp including a new roof, double glazed windows, extensive repairs and a lift upgrade so it opens on the ground floor and each and every floor within the block.

Councillors on the Town Centre Revival Committee will receive an update report on the plans tonight (Tuesday 9 March).

Leader of Basildon Council and Chairman of the Town Centre Revival Committee Councillor Gavin Callaghan said: “Brooke House has long been a talking point, often for all the wrong reasons. This investment will bring the building up to a standard that will enhance the lives of everyone who lives there.

“The town centre will be transforming in the coming years as part of our ambitious plans to create a town centre fit for the future. We must not leave Brooke House behind. It’s an iconic building in the town and has so much potential, which, with this investment, will be realised.”

The revamp also includes an upgrade to communal doors on each floor and to stairwells and walkways.

Work will be undertaken within individual flats to ensure all kitchens and bathrooms are up to standard.

New fans will be installed within the properties to improve the ventilation and full redecoration and repairs of the exterior of the block and the communal walkways and stairwells will be undertaken.

The council is proposing to undertake the package of works in a number of phases depending on the outcomes from resident consultations and the timing of obtaining the required listed planning consents.

The council will be carrying out a full consultation exercise with all tenants and leaseholders around the final scope of the work so we can seek their views ahead of tendering the project.
