11 Mar Council plants 16 new trees to improve bio-diversity in Wickford
Basildon Council and volunteers from the Wickford Wombles litter picking group planted 16 new trees along Radwinter Avenue this morning (Tuesday 10 March) in a bid to improve bio-diversity in the area.
The silver birch, cherry and crab apple trees were planted as part of the council’s pollinator project which aims to plant trees and wildflower seeds across the borough to help bees and other pollinating insects.
Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison said: “Improving the bio-diversity by planting specifically chosen trees that will benefit our insect life is something I am passionate about. I would like to thank members of the Wickford Wombles who share that passion and gave their time to help plant these trees. Together with the trees the wombles planted in December we’ve now planted more than 20 new trees along Radwinter Avenue since the end of last year.”
