Colchester first Musicircus a huge success!

15 Jun Colchester first Musicircus a huge success!

John Cage’s unusual music concept, a Musicircus, made its way to Colchester for the very first time – and what a triumphant, trumpeting bang-the-drum instant classic it was!
A free community event, Colchester’s very first Musicircus saw performers simultaneously creating a cacophony of sound from Culver Walk and Lion Walk, through Eld Lane and Sir Isaac’s Walk and into Culver Square and Culver Street West – completely immersing Colchester in sound.

From local professionals within the music industry to young schoolchildren taking part, musical artists gave up their time to entertain and provide real joy in a celebration of music with this unusual concept that first was created and performed back in the 1960s, courtesy of John Cage the American composer.

Carla Hales, the founder for the event said “It’s been such a wonderful day – everyone has enjoyed themselves immensely. Our thanks go to all the performers who gave up their time, our sponsors and partners such as Essex Music Services, Lion Walk and In Colchester BID and our delivery partner KAT Marketing. The range of instruments that have been played today and seeing what has been a dream of mine become a reality is truly humbling and we hope to make it annual event for Colchester.”

Sarah Louise, one of the phenomenal Colchester Musicircus performers, said “We had an amazing time performing for such a historical event in my own home town of Colchester, making memories and music with people is what I love to do most.”

Colchester’s Musicircus worked alongside partners including Colchester Lion Walk, Essex Music Service, In Colchester and KAT Marketing.

Martin Leatherdale, of Colchester Lion Walk Shopping Centre, said, “It’s a pleasure to sponsor new immersive and experiential initiatives in our city centre, and a testament to the success of the event that over 6,000 people enjoyed the 2 hours of Musicircus in Lion Walk, with footfall out performing pre pandemic levels of 2019. Well done to all involved and looking forward to our next line up of events with the Lion Walk summer drinks terrace.”

Mandy Miller had seen online that a musical extravaganza was planned for the weekend and had headed on into the centre to take a look and judge it first hand for herself: “Oh we had an absolutely smashing afternoon in town! Such lovely music taking place everywhere you turned. Even our doggies came along with us and enjoyed it. A Musicircus is such a different idea and we thought it was really, really brilliant.”
