14 Aug Colchester firefighting girls camp proves a hit
Firefighters from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service made the most of their summer last week as they spent time with children at the St John Bosco Centre teaching them firefighting activities and skills.
The 100 girls, who come from deprived areas in London, stayed at the camp near Colchester for a week long activity holiday with the holiday camp proving a hit amongst the girls in attendance.
The girls were put through their paces by the firefighters taking part in hose running, water dam building, hose squirting and wearing breathing apparatus.
Crew Manager, Liam George, Halstead Fire Station said:
“We have had an absolutely brilliant day here with the girls. They have all tried lots of activities and even mastered the tricky hose running. I think they have all especially enjoyed the squirting water with the fire hoses and dressing up in our fire gear.”
He added “It’s brilliant to see the girls have so much fun while working together and helping each other achieve the goals of the activity.”
Firefighters from Braintree and Halstead Fire Station were joined by members of the Service’s youth engagement and Community Safety team.
