Cllr Graham Butland: “We need to recognize the dangers of smoking in pregnancy”

24 Mar Cllr Graham Butland: “We need to recognize the dangers of smoking in pregnancy”

Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Cllr Graham Butland has said “It is really important that we recognize the dangers associated with smoking in pregnancy” as he spoke ahead of a new countywide campaign that will direct women to local stop smoking services, and offer them support in quitting.

The new countywide campaign will launch at the beginning of April that aims to educate Mums-to-be and their families on the dangers of smoking while pregnant.

Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Cllr Graham Butland, said: “Recent figures show that one-in-ten pregnant women in Essex were smokers at the time of having their babies in 2015/16, which is a figure that we need to urgently reduce.

It is really important that we recognize the dangers associated with smoking in pregnancy and at the same time help Mums-to-be access the support they need to quit.”
“This campaign will see a unique and hard-hitting approach that we hope will get people talking about the issue and raise awareness of the fantastic local support available for those wanting to stop smoking.”
The campaign will launch on Monday 3 April and will run for one month. It has been developed through working with pregnant women, midwives, local Mums’ groups and healthcare professionals.
