05 Jan “Bun that, wasteman”: These are most iconic slang words said in The South
From ‘blud’ to ‘butters’, a lot of slang we hear in everyday British life has emerged from the South – but truth be told they don’t all come from London!
As part of their brand new study, the team at Preply used sources such as Oxford Royale and Green’s Dictionary of Slang to identify the common slang words said in Southern cities.
Here are the results…
The most common slang words of the South
Bristol – Drive
London – Dapper
Leicester – Jitty
When it comes to slang words that originate from Bristol, things start to get a bit confusing. For example, the word ‘drive’ in slang Bristolian terms refers to somebody that drives a taxi or a bus – whereas the majority of the UK would usually refer to as a ‘driver’.
Unsurprisingly, London is home to ‘dapper’, known as a reference to a man dressed in a fashionable and tidy way. The capital also has ‘skeen’ which means that somebody is being sneaky or untrustworthy, as well as ‘bun that’ which is used to show dissatisfaction with something, similarly to ‘stuff that’.
In the city of Leicester, the term ‘jitty’, a reference to a passageway or alleyway, is commonly said. This is alongside ‘offeh’, which is a shortened and more informal way of referring to an off-licence.
