11 Oct #Billericay: Award nomination for Community Cinema @BillericayCine
@BillericayCine, the community cinema launched in Billericay last year, has been nominated in two categories at the 2016 Film Society of the Year awards.
Run by local community volunteers and hosted at Billericay Library, the pop-up cinema is celebrating its first birthday this month, with the news that it has been recognised by the national industry awards in both the Best Marketing and New Society of the Year categories.
Launched following an Essex County Council event inviting residents to share ideas for how they would like to use the space within their library, the cinema has gone from strength to strength.
Showing a mixture of new ‘cinema’, classic movies, ‘shorts’, art house and foreign language films, the cinema has shown 24 films to over 1000 visitors in its first year.
Cllr Anne Brown, Cabinet Member responsible for libraries at Essex County Council, said: “This is a really great example of what can be achieved through cooperation and collaboration for the betterment of our community.
“Projects like this need passion and enthusiasm, and in Adam and his team have this in spades. They have driven this idea forward, turning it into reality, and these award nominations are really the icing on the cake for them.
“It’s also fantastic that we are able to make full use of our library space. @BillericayCine shows that by working together, we can innovate to benefit the local community.”
Adam Adshead, Chairman of @BillericayCine, added: “@BillericayCine provides local, community focussed, affordable entertainment right on our High Street.
“Our shows aren’t just about the film; they’re about the whole experience. From the friendly welcome as you enter the door to the extended entertainment – whether that be themed art and craft or face painting for families, or talks, live music and themed evenings for the adults. From local beers to tea served in china tea cups and freshly made popcorn, we aim to build on the friendly, community atmosphere in our town.”
