01 Jul Battle of the Somme 100year anniversary marked in Basildon
One hundred years ago British troops took part in the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front, which was fought on the River Somme in France; more than one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
The Battle of the Somme is being commemorated across the country and in Basildon borough residents and visitors are invited to take part in a special event to mark this chapter in World War l.
The Wickford commemoration of the Somme will take place at Wickford Memorial Park on Saturday 9 July, starting at 11am.
