Basildon at 70 vintage tea dance hailed a success

08 May Basildon at 70 vintage tea dance hailed a success

An original 1950’s dancing dress, decorative antique china and dancing that would have scored highly on a Strictly Come Dancing scoreboard were all part of the Basildon at 70 vintage tea dance at Woodlands School last Saturday.

The tea dance organised by Basildon Council and the school, welcomed residents who are aged 70 to celebrate Basildon New Town’s 70th birthday with students from the school serving afternoon tea and live music from the 50s and 60s being performed by the school’s music department.

The event, which was dementia friendly and free to attend was enjoyed by more than 60 new town residents.

After the tea dance, the Mayor of Basildon, Cllr David Dadds JP, said: “I can’t convey enough how feel-good and heart-warming the tea dance was. Seeing the students helping and chatting to our older residents and everyone having a good time made it a memorable day as part of this year of our community marking the 70th anniversary of Basildon new town”.

David Wright, Head Teacher of Woodlands School, added: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the school to give something extra back to our community which we are all very proud of. So many smiling faces and great stories linking the past to the future”.
