20 Aug Anyone for tennis? Look no further than Basildon’s St Martin’s Square
Visitors to St Martin’s Square will be served up a sporting treat when a pop-up tennis court is installed for two days at the end of the month.
Active Basildon, Basildon Tennis Club and Basildon Council have teamed up to give passers-by the opportunity to take part or watch demonstrations.
The court will be in the square opposite the Basildon Centre and Towngate Theatre from 10am to 4pm on Friday 30 August and 10am to 3pm on Saturday 31 August, which coincides with the New Town Sounds music event.
Deputy Mayor of Basildon Councillor Derrick Fellowes said: “St Martin’s Square has undergone a big make over recently and is the perfect arena for community activity. It’s exciting to be working with Everyone Active and Basildon Tennis Club to bring tennis into the square at a time when we are celebrating 70 years since the new town was created. I hope as many people as possible come along and have a go.”
Co-Chairman of Basildon Tennis Club Dominic Green added: “I have always had a passion for tennis myself, but since becoming the co-chairman of Basildon Tennis Club my new passion is helping others get into sport. I started up again a few years ago having stopped playing when I was 15. It is never too late to start or get back into sport.
“Basildon Tennis Club has a vast range of members whether it be men, women and children or beginners and advanced players. I am looking forward to meeting the residents of Basildon during this event to show them how much fun they can have and how friendly the club is. No need to bring anything with you on the day, as rackets, balls and hopefully the sun will all be provided for you.”
